It was a year ago, May 7th, we flew to Ireland. Although we were entirely excited for our first visit to the Emerald Isle, we weren’t looking forward to the 10 1/2 hour flight.
Needless to say, this was probably the best flight we’ve ever flown as paying passengers. Our travel mantra kicked in~ expect the unexpected. When the flight attendant announced complimentary drinks and movies I pinched myself and asked, “Did you say complimentary?”
Forget the neck pillow, I’m drinking beer and watching movies. I’ve got three weeks of slow travel to catch up sleeping. Along with the free drinks, it seemed they were feeding us every couple hours.
The flight was timely. With a 1pm departure from Portland arriving in Amsterdam the next morning at 8am with an easy connection for the short hop into Dublin.
The local bus dropped us off just across the street from our guesthouse. Checked in, dropped down our bags, and put on our walking shoes. Time to explore.
First stop, The Celt. Introduced ourselves to the bartender, toasted a safe arrival in Ireland with our first pint of Smithwick’s , and tacked a postcard to the wall behind the bar.
We pub-crawled our way through historical Dublin until arriving back at the Hazelbrook House just before midnight.
And because May 7th would be my brother’s Birthday, we’re raising a pint to Dave today, Slainté!!
