Summer of ’79

I met Hali the Summer of ’79. We were only sixteen.

I was reminded of that just yesterday when I heard Sam Cooke sing it. . .

She was only sixteen, only sixteen
With eyes that would glow
But she was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know
She was too young to fall in love
And I was too young to know

It was a Saturday night and Hali was cruisin’ the mall with a girlfriend when my band of buddies spotted these chicks. For Hali’s girlfriend it was love at first sight. Fortunately, that friend was recovering from wisdom teeth extraction the Friday night I invited Hali to the beach in Santa Cruz a couple weeks later. For us, it was love on that first night.

We were married on a hot May day in 1984 at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, California. I rarely use clichés but I’ll use one now. The rest is history. . .

But what really knocked me out was her cheap sunglasses.

Sorry for the thirty-five year gap as we have grown up together BUT those “gap years” photos are neatly arranged into albums tucked into Hali’s cedar hope chest back in Florida. AND there’s no need to bore you with a million word story or history lesson.

As I said earlier, I rarely use clichés but I’ll use another now. And they lived happily ever after. . .

. . . Don’t worry, it’s not THE END. We’re only halfway through this fairy tale storybook.
