Every kid growing up in the ’70’s remembers finding these sea creatures clinging to the rocks of the jetties jutting into the Pacific Ocean. This is Arne and Hali in San Diego~~~
I recently heard on NPR that the sea star population is rapidly declining due to something called sea star wasting disease. The tidal environment that is their habitat is constantly interrupted with higher water temperatures causing the sea star population to die off.
This summer while driving down the California coast, we’ll be looking forward to catching a glimpse of these falling sea stars while visiting the Big Sur coastal reserve. It may be our last chance before they become a protected species or simply disappear altogether.
Arne? Well, forty years later, he’s turned out all right.
