Middle of Nowhere

I have friends who make it a point to let everyone guess “where in the world?” are they. Maybe a selfie in Seattle on the Space Needle (ooh) or at an art museum in São Paulo Brazil (aah). For us, there’s something to be said about enjoying being in the middle of nowhere. I’m not implying being “stuck” in the middle of nowhere, but choosing to stay and enjoy being there.

Where are Woody and Hali? Tonight, south central Oregon. No, the van didn’t break down in the dreaded “middle of nowhere“. We were driving down Hwy 97 between Bend and Klamath Falls and decided on stopping for a night or two. Pulled off the main road and followed an old forest road along Paulina Creek. Tucked inside the forest of lodge pole pines was a secluded campground with just one other campsite taken (the camp host). We chose one a bit further up the gravel road alongside the creek, or “crick” according to the camp host.

For a couple of nights we’ve enjoyed…

Songbirds and the gentle ripple in the creek~~~then, completely quiet.

No one barking “keep your dog on a leash!“.

Cooking the entire dinner over open campfire.

Drinking water a short walk away.

Reading and writing without Wi-Fi.

Trout anglers? Only me.

No worries about hot water in the showers, we have the creek and Eco-friendly soap.

No next door neighbor campers competing with OUR music compilation.

The only pickpocket to worry about is that darn picnic table, cherry pickin’ chipmunk who, by the way, also clipped off all the clover of our mascot RV plant, Lucky.

Black waning-moon sky, speckled white with our universe. And tonight, yes, we are just a speck upon a speckle, in the middle of nowhere (ooh, aah).

About Woody

We are a couple who took the first step toward a life of traveling in May, 2015. Staying within the continental US, we amp'd the adventure-factor by traveling in a VW Vanagon, circa 1985. Our mission is to share irresistible and compelling stories conceived from this lifestyle of travel.
