The Great American Melodrama in the tiny beach town of Oceano is celebrating forty fabulous years of theater. Last Thursday night we were lucky enough to catch a show~La Rue’s Return…How’s a bayou? It was fantastic!
This spoof set in New Orleans brings the charm of the French Quarter and creepiness of the bayou to the folks of Oceano. Robbery, revenge, and heroism kept the audience booing, hissing, and cheering throughout the entire show. Plus, every show includes a vaudeville revue full of song, dance, and comedy sketches.
The show was well attended and I commented to Hali after the show that these performances have to be top-notch to support this small community for that long. Six showtimes a week! People come from all over the central coast for these productions.
During intermission the cast interacts with the guests by musically and comically serving popcorn and drinks back in the lobby. We passed on the popcorn but Mimi La Rue poured us a couple pints of beer. And this is what she told us:
A pirate walks into a bar and orders a drink. The bartender looks down and says, “You know you have a steering wheel in your pants?” The pirate replies, “Ay, it’s drivin’ me nuts.”
In my best pirate voice, I grunt:
