At the end of the trail that leads to the beach is this stunning bronze dancing sea nymph. A landmark here in Ventura that overlooks the harbor from Soter Point.
The sculpture was donated to Marina Park by Russian immigrants who emigrated over twenty years ago and dedicated it to the city for “the love of new country”. She symbolizes love’s joys and sorrows as she plays her sea flute to the boats passing through the harbor and the waves gently lapping the rocks at the point.
What a fine gift the people of Ventura received from these newly settled immigrants. And a true testament that beauty and love can flourish if we take care of and inspire art that inspires others. The plaque reads, “From Russia With Love”.
I sat upon a promontory,
And heard a mermaid, on a dolphin’s back,
Uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath,
That the rude sea grew civil at her song;
And certain stars shot madly from their spheres,
To hear the sea-maid’s music.
